The Imitation of : AI Can’t Write True Fiction

It’s true that Artificial Intelligence (AI) can produce thousands of words in seconds. It can mimic sentence structures, follow genre conventions, and even generate dialogue. But AI doesn’t feel. It doesn’t know longing, regret, joy, or grief. When writers use AI to draft fiction without human editing or research, the result becomes hollow, repetitive, and emotionally empty.

The most immediate problem is bare sentences. AI generates text based on patterns. It might write, “The sun set over the horizon, casting an orange glow across the sky.” That sentence is grammatically correct but adds nothing to the plot, character, or theme. A human writer would ask: Does this sunset matter? Does it foreshadow loss? Mirror a character’s hope? Without intentionality, description becomes decoration. Over several pages, these lifeless sentences accumulate, and the reader senses that nothing is at stake.

Repetition is another common flaw. AI models favor safety. They reuse phrases, metaphors, and scene structures because those patterns appeared frequently in their training data. A character might “feel a chill run down their spine” three times in one chapter. An AI might describe a room’s “faint smell of coffee and old paper” in every scene set there. Humans notice repetition and revise. If AI writing is left unchecked, the result loops rather than progresses. It becomes a story that spins its wheels without a proper ending.

What’s worse is that AI cannot track emotional arcs. It doesn’t remember that a character’s trauma in chapter 1 should influence their choices in chapter 10. It only predicts the next likely word, phrase, or sentence. So a protagonist who witnessed a murder might, two pages later, crack a joke without any tension or irony because AI saw “humorous dialogue” as probable in a casual scene. A human editor would flag this as a breach of psychological truth. Without that edit, the story loses credibility.

Plot holes also emerge when AI writes unsupervised. It may introduce a key object such as a letter, weapon, or secret, but then, it never mentions it again. It’s lost in the plot. It might change a character’s eye color or backstory. These errors happen because AI has no long-term narrative memory. They work sentence by sentence.

Research is equally absent. AI can’t verify facts about historical settings, medical procedures, or legal details without any reminders from the writer. It just confidently generates falsehoods. A human writer must research and correct these mistakes, or the fiction becomes laughable to an informed reader.

The best AI-assisted fiction comes from humans who treat AI as a flawed junior partner. They cut empty sentences, break repetitive patterns, and fact-check every claim. Without that human layer, the story may look like fiction, but it will not feel like one.
